Throwing is just one step in the process of making pottery on the wheel. Trimming and other refining techniques are equally important parts of the process, and oftentimes these steps are what distinguish a beautifully crafted piece from one that’s just okay. If you’d like to level up your work, this class is for you.

This class is recommended for advanced beginners and intermediate level potters who feel comfortable with the throwing process. Classes meet for two hours each week for a total of four sessions, with open studio time every day for you to practice on your own. It is recommended that you are already comfortable with basic wheel techniques before taking this class.

Location: This class will be held at our new Downtown studio:  588 Mateo St Los Angeles, CA 90013

In this course, you will learn strategies to improve the quality of your work at every stage of the process. We’ll cover how to throw with trimming in mind, various trimming methods, helpful tools, how to fix common mistakes, getting the glaze results you want, and how to start honing in on what elements make a piece of pottery “perfect” to you as an artist.

To get the most out of this class, you should feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes you learned in the four week Beginning Wheel course, and can somewhat reliably wedge, center, and throw 2.5-3 lbs of clay. Typically, students take Beginning Wheel twice before taking Continuing Wheel.

Please note: While we will be throwing during some of the class sessions, the focus of this course is less on throwing technique and more on what happens after throwing.

In addition to the weekly class meetings, we have open hours seven days a week for you to come in and work on your own.

Continuing Wheel students should bring their own clay, tools, and bats (we recommend at least four 12" bats). We have a supply shop at the studio where you can purchase these things if you need them. The course fee includes firing for up to 15 pieces and use of studio recycled clay.
