Still Life Studios is excited to host Raku firing experiences for members, students, and the general public. Please join us and discover the magic of Raku! Explore an array of different raku techniques, including a selection of raku glazes to be used alongside post-firing reduction, as well as options for naked raku, alcohol reduction, horse hair raku (BYOHS: bring your own horse hair*) and obvara, a.k.a. Baltic raku. Baltic raku is done by pulling pieces out of the kiln while they are still hot and dunking them quickly in the obvara mixture, which is made from water, flour, yeast, and sugar. Finally, the pieces are quenched in water to seal the effect onto the surface. The result is pottery with beautiful patterns in creamy tans, browns, and blacks.
The firings are led by staff in our parking lot, where participants witness the process.
How To Book:
Using the drop-down menu below, select the size and number of each piece you would like to fire. You can book slots for multiple pieces by adding to the cart and changing the quantity there. Return to the booking page to select a different size.
*Our size limit is 11” height by 8” diameter per piece.
We offer 5 different Raku glazes and terra sigilatta included in the raku experience, which will be made available for preparing your pieces a week ahead of the scheduled raku firing. You can access the studio between 10am and 5pm daily beginning a week before the scheduled Raku Firing to glaze and drop off your pieces. Please make sure you drop off your bisqueware on our designated racks for the firing no later than the Tuesday before the firing. Staff will guide you to the designated "Raku Corner" so you can use the glazes and drop off your pieces.
Groggy clay tends to hold up better to thermal shock, so we recommend using a body with substantial grog or raku clay. Our house reclaim clay is another great option! Participants doing Horse hair raku must provide their own horse hair or other combustibles such as feathers and sugar for different effects on the surface
