Explore the possibilities of unconventional glaze firings in this hands-on workshop taught by Maxwell Henderson. Learn Max’s Gloop glaze approach: mixing glaze to a clay-like consistency so it can be rolled, shaped, and assembled wet, then fired so it stretches, bends, drips, and flows while retaining intentional form. Participants will discuss color and pattern strategy with the goal of controlled distortion rather than intricate fixed patterning, as this workshop explores how material moves dramatically in the kiln.
All levels welcome.
588 Mateo St, Los Angeles, CA, 90013
This is a two-day workshop meeting on:
- Saturday, May 16th, 2026: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
- Sunday, May 17th, 2026: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to mix and color a controlled amount of glaze material (~2 lb Gloop glaze per person). Students will then use pre-fired cylinders as a base, and insert/assemble their colored, rolled Gloop glaze onto/into the cylinder as the primary build method for the workshop project. Still Life studio will provide one pre-fired cylinder for each participant.
Day 1: Overview of Gloop Glaze Process
-
Instructor demonstration
-
Color mixing + glaze math
-
Students will begin batching their glazes
Day 2: Assembly
-
Students build and sculpt their wet clay
-
Students will assemble into the pre-fired cylinders
-
Studio then dries/fires to cone 06 after the build day (pickup once cool)
In this intensive; two-day workshop, students will focus on building essential skills:
-
Material handling + forming
-
Color systems
-
Glaze math + waste reduction
-
Firing strategies and additional considerations for different kilns
Participants are welcome to make and bring their own pierced forms if you would like to use excess glaze material on another piece - these should be glaze fired ahead of time and made from a suitable clay body (cone 5).
