The Ceramic Furniture Masterclass is a three-day interactive workshop where participants will fabricate a chair, stool, or side table. Each student will learn Austin’s coil and slab-building techniques with an emphasis on moisture control and proper attachment styles. Austin will instruct on where, when, and how, to add internal supports for optimal weight distribution for each piece of furniture. Students will learn how to enclose forms, construct shrink slabs, properly dry each chair, and how to move and fire finished works. Austin will also discuss multiple methods for mending surface cracks at each stage of the process. This course is designed for Intermediate or advanced makers, not for beginning students.
Note:
*75 lbs of cone 5 clay will be included in the workshop fee. Additional clay will be available for purchase.
*Participants may fire their piece at Still Life or choose to fire at another studio. The workshop fee includes firing (1) piece to Cone 5. Glazing is not included in the workshop fee.
*Participants are responsible for coordinating and shipping works. Austin will speak more about this on the first day of class. If choosing to fire at Still Life, furniture must be picked up within 3 days of final firing to avoid storage fees.
Day 1: Austin will introduce the workshop, covering topics like slab shrinkage and interior structure. Students will sketch 3-4 furniture designs, with guidance on which options are most suitable for beginners. They will then sculpt 2-3 mini maquettes based on their sketches. The day will conclude with starting the main furniture piece by building base slabs and coils, while Austin provides instruction on proper building techniques, including slab rolling, coil attachment, and methods to prevent warping and cracking.
Day 2: Participants will focus on the main furniture construction. Austin will guide students through adding internal supports and ensuring structural integrity in their pieces. Techniques for coil compression and closing up furniture structures will be covered, along with tips on flipping tables as needed. Students will also have the opportunity to refine their maquettes if they choose to keep them.
Day 3: Austin will instruct students on refining their furniture pieces, smoothing surfaces, and adding texture as desired. They will also discuss the drying process, preparing pieces for kiln firing, and offer a firing schedule for large furniture items. Surface finish options will be explored, and Austin will assist with loading completed pieces into vehicles for transport if necessary.
