This workshop blends practical, hands-on experience with detailed technical insights under José's guidance. Participants will learn how to formulate and apply basic crystalline glazes, and then dive deeper into creating their own custom crystalline glazes.
Day 1: Participants will formulate crystalline glazes, apply them to their pieces, properly apply alumina, and set up pedestals for firing. The first kiln firing will begin.
Day 2: José will cover firing schedules and temperature control, explore crystallization theory, and discuss how crystals form at specific temperatures. There will be an overview of electric versus gas firing (oxidation), reduction firing in gas kilns, and post-reduction techniques. The session will also explain frits, how they function, and which are ideal for crystalline glazes, along with tips to optimize results and avoid common errors.
Day 3: We’ll unload the kiln, separate pieces from the pedestals, and analyze the results. The session will cover using acids to alter final appearances and introduce the use of slips with pigments, along with glaze formulation techniques for creating red backgrounds.
Participants are asked to bring up to (8) bowls or plates in Cone 10 porcelain or white stoneware that are bisque and ready to glaze. Participants who partake in the Advanced Wheel Throwing with José M. Mariscal workshop will receive a $50 discount for the Crystalline Workshop.
