Join Chicago-based artist Laura Williams for a dynamic, hands-on, and illustration workshop designed to spark creativity through clay, drawing, and playful exploration. Over two immersive days, participants learn multiple processes from slab building, scrafitto, sculpting, and underglaze application, all in one workshop!
On day one, Laura will guide us through all things cartooning & creative imagery - taking 2D drawings and applying them to the 3D canvas of a ceramic cup. After rolling out slabs and constructing some basic cup shapes, we’ll dive in with guided drawing exercises to get the creative juices flowing, and to develop an artistic vocabulary to take with us through the workshop. Once our ideas are sketched out, students will learn to utilize sgraffito & inlay as techniques on our now-ready slab cups, creating a bold base for which we’ll translate our designs onto the clay using colorful underglazes and terra sigillata. Choose to add festive attachments, expressive handles, or anything else your mind can dream up to round out your imaginative original work of art!
During day 2, we then explore the art of setting a scene through a pinching and texture-building exercise beginning with a single piece of clay. Participants transition into guided work time before a demo focused on sculpting faces, heads, and hands, offering practical strategies for capturing character and expression through clay. After further work time, a session on texture play and adding colour invites experimentation and surface exploration. We finish the day by completing all ongoing projects, ensuring each participant leaves with a collection of expressive, personally meaningful pieces.
Experience: Beginner-friendly! All materials, tools, firing, and clay will be provided.588 Mateo St, Los Angeles, CA, 90013
