Join artist Matt Waterson for a hands-on, immersive three-day workshop designed to guide participants through the complete process of creating sculptural ceramic furniture. Blending lectures, demonstrations, personalized guidance, and studio work time, this course is ideal for artists looking to expand their practice into large-scale ceramic forms.
Day 1 begins with an introductory lecture exploring ceramic furniture as an art form—its history, possibilities, and structural considerations. A live demonstration follows, giving students a clear understanding of the building techniques they’ll use. Each participant then meets one-on-one with the instructor to plan their individual project. By the afternoon, students begin constructing their own ceramic furniture pieces under guided support.
Day 2 opens with a second instructional demonstration focused on advanced forming techniques. The morning also includes a talk on interior supports, covering essential strategies for ensuring stability and successful firing. The remainder of the day is dedicated studio time, allowing students to make significant progress on their personal projects with ongoing feedback.
Day 3 features a concluding lecture and a final demonstration before students complete the building phase of their pieces and set them to dry. The workshop closes with a group critique session, offering thoughtful discussion and shared learning. Participants will also have time for documentation, including photographs of their finished work, and will receive a certificate of completion.
By the end of this intensive, students walk away with a finished ceramic furniture piece, a deeper understanding of structural ceramic practices, and the confidence to continue exploring large-scale clay work in their own studios.
